Gerwyn Price survived a fright during his second round match against Ritchie Edhouse at the World Darts Championship. Here’s a summary of the action from day one …

Reigning champion Gerwyn Price received a cold reception on his return to the World Championship, but despite being frightened by underdog Ritchie Edhouse, the world number 1 stumbled on opening night at Alexandra Palace.

Price, who is looking to join Phil Taylor, Gary Anderson, and Adrian Lewis as consecutive PDC world champions, soon found himself on the ropes before turning on afterburners to go through four sets.

Two-time world champion Adrian Lewis staged a mouth-watering fight with Gary Anderson after coming from a set to defeat Matt Campbell, while Ricky Evans passed easily, finishing with 56% on his doubles and averaging three darts of 96.20, to beat Nitin Kumar.

World No 80 Edhouse got through a tough battle with Peter Hudson, to arrange a meeting with Welshman Price, and came out of it shooting some huge numbers.

The Hastings pitcher, who returned to the PDC Pro Tour this year, whitewashed “The Iceman” to seal the opening set.

A below average Price let out his famous roar after winning the third leg of the second set, but an inspired Edhouse pinned 106 to send him to a decider. However, Price dug deep with a checkout of 86 to make things right.

Edhouse won the first two legs of the third set, but Price returned to level up before taking the lead 2-1 with a searing 130 on target.

A long-awaited first session saw world champion Lewis face off against Canadian ace Campbell against one another.

Campbell, who appeared to Ally Pally for the third consecutive year, saw the two-leg advantage evaporate quickly over Lewis, but “GinjaNinja” remained calm to make it through the first set with a final 66 with “Jackpot” in the lead.

Lewis, on his 17th World Cup appearance, swept away the unanswered second set to level up.

The drama continued into the fifth leg of the fourth set as Lewis hit a timely high before sealing the win with his third dart of the match.
