Willie Garson ‘told Sarah Jessica Parker of cancer battle before other Sex and the City co-stars’

Willie Garson kept his battle with cancer a secret from his Sex and the City co-stars for a short while, but told his longtime friend Sarah Jessica Parker.

Actor Willie was 57 when he died in September, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Willie’s death came as a shock to the fans. And Willie didn’t initially disclose his battle with cancer to some of the SATC castmates, actress Cynthia Nixon revealed.

Cynthia, 55, told Deadline: “Wille Garson’s death was obviously, completely unexpected, unknown.

“Sarah Jessica was the only one who knew he was sick during filming until things became undeniable and then we were told.

“Luckily we were able to shoot with him not only before he got sick, but after he got sick as well, so it could be something we could discuss and listen to.

“I know it was very important for us and I think it was something important for him too: don’t hide it from us anymore.”

Cynthia, who plays Mirdana Hobbs on SATC and the sequel to the show And Just Like That, quoted the show’s Charlotte York Goldenblatt quote, played by Kirstin Davis.

“As Charlotte says, ‘Death is a part of life,’ but it reminds us how precious our loved ones are to us,” she said.

Willie appears in the first two episodes of And Just Like That as his SATC character Stanford Blatch. But it is not yet known how the series will handle the actor’s death in its next few episodes.

After Willie’s death, Sex and the City star Sarah, 56, shared a heartbreaking tribute to the star.

She told Vogue: “All I can say right now is that it’s like I got a scoop off this week, and I don’t expect it to be filled.

“Over time, my body will get used to this new architecture, but now I feel really sad.

“It’s such a loss and I think how much I will miss the joy of these relationships.”

He added: “I think about Willie and the show and how much we laughed.

“And I guess, despite everything, this is the title: there is so much good in the world, and we were all so lucky to be together, to do something we loved.”
