ALPENA – After a weak but victorious start to the season a week ago, the Alpena High boys’ basketball team responded in style in their second game of the season as the Wildcats dominated a visit to Bay City Western on Thursday.

Alpena got a stellar effort from brothers Bright and Mason Mumford as the trio teamed up to outrun the Warriors on their own, combining for 52 points on the night.

Cooper Bright led the way with 24 points and Tucker Bright and Mason Mumford added 14 points each to propel the Wildcats to a compelling 71-50 win over Bay City Western.

“I thought our transition was great in the beginning. We got the shots, we had good pressure in defense and our defensive rebound was great on mistakes. We got a lot of layups, a lot of easy baskets and I thought the whole first half we played fantastic, “said Alpena manager John Pintar.” I was really happy that our boys came out and played with. a great pace. You can’t ask for a much better effort than we had to start the game tonight. “

Alpena wasted no time jumping over all the Warriors, scoring the first nine points of the game and closing the first quarter with 13 unanswered points, taking the lead 22-3.

The Wildcats were not satisfied and continued to build the lead throughout the second quarter.

The Bright brothers led the way, combining for 26 points in the first half. Cooper stimulated Alpena with 15 of his 24 points in the first half and Tucker added 11 of his 14 points in the first half while the Wildcats led 39-14 at half time.

Fortunately, Alpena built a huge lead in the first half. The Wildcats’ play in the third quarter was not as sharp as they seemed to lose some focus, turning the ball and playing sloppy in the third, but they still managed to keep a 53-35 lead by going into the fourth and closed the match to improve to 2-0 early in the season.

“I thought tonight we took that step you have to take from first to second,” said Pintar. “I was very happy with how we played tonight and with our commitment.”

The Wildcats will be back in action today when they travel to Cadillac for their opening of the Big North Conference.

The Alpena JV team lost with a score of 47-33 to Bay City Western.

The Wildcats were led by Zach Kunath who scored eight points and Caleb McEwen added seven.

Alpena’s freshman team lost 34-32 heartthrob at Bay City Western. Oliver Duthler led the Alpena with 12 points and Connor Cameron participated with 11 points.
