It occurs to me that it is only a week before Christmas Eve and the spirit has not yet descended in my presence.
I tried listening to the Christmas song station, but Have a Holly Jolly Christmas doesn’t. What is Holly Jolly anyway? It looks like a dance from the 60s.
Then there is the grandmother overwhelmed by a reindeer. Whose idea was this? What’s next, Uncle Joe gets eaten by a shark on Christmas Eve? Who is responsible for these horrible melodies? Satan?
How about Madonna singing Santa Baby out of breath. She wants St. Nick to rush down the chimney to give her the stuff. The material girl strikes again. Should we play this song?
Then there is the shopping. Fear of going. Too many variations. They hide and hide in the screens. Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus all wear masks by order of DeBlasio. The three sages of Persia must show vax passports to enter Bethlehem.
This is madness.
Despite the challenges, I will finally find the spirit of Christmas. I always do it. Because it is uplifting and necessary. Even if you are not a believer.
We live in a secular world where constant gratification is the life goal of many. This is a bad place to be and once a year a season of giving to others reminds us of that.
So starting tonight, I’ll be reading some Charles Dickens Christmas stories and I might as well watch A Christmas Carol with Alistair Sim, not Bill Murray.
I still have time to capture the elusive Christmas spirit. And I will.
