POWER ON: While many in the fashion industry have come back again to reschedule plans instead of executing them, 92Y is moving forward with its spring installment of “Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis”.
Building on the success of a sold out fall season that included conversations with Brandon Maxwell and Prabal Gurung, Mallis fielded two enterprising leaders in women’s fashion.
Glorifying the upcoming appearances, Mallis noted that the fact that less than 14% of global fashion brands are led by women has prompted her to use her platform to feature female leaders, “who with their names and influence. they are creating a more diverse and equitable environment and an inclusive future for all women ”.
First in line is Tory Burch, who will sit with Mallis on March 30 at Upper East Side Y. The following week, supermodel, activist and founder of Every Mother Counts, Christy Turlington Burns, will take the stage on April 7.
Mallis said of Burch: “Tory has been talking for years about joining me at Fashion Icons. With her evolving role in her brand and all the good work she’s doing to empower women with the Tory Burch Foundation, it seemed like the perfect time to have her title on an evening at 92Y. “
The designer built an estimated $ 1.5 billion company from the ground up.
Mallis said she loves it when her guests have a shared story. Burns had attended one of Mallis’ previous fashion icons speeches: a 2018 question and answer session with famed photographer Arthur Elgort. “He spoke so lovingly of their partnership and friendship over the years. I knew I had to have her on stage, ”Mallis said.
They discussed the prospect the night following Elgort’s honorary doctorate ceremony at Hunter College, Mallis said. “When 92Y reopened for live events, Christy was one of the first people to agree to be part of the return of Fashion Icons.”
