Nicky Maynard’s first goal in Sky Bet League Two for Tranmere helped Rovers win 2-0 over Barrow and put Micky Mellon’s side into the top three.
Maynard’s previous four goals for the Prenton Park side had all been scored in the Papa John’s Trophy.
So there was extra joy for the former Crewe, Bristol City and Mansfield striker as he evaded Barrow’s offside trap to control Jay Spearing’s free-kick and take home after just seven minutes.
Tranmere left late before securing a fifth consecutive league win, but Kieron Morris’s 85th-minute goal closed the points, leaving Rovers just two points behind second-placed Northampton after playing one match. more.
After securing the lead with Maynard, the division’s worst defense put an end to the visitors’ attempts to create the tie.
Barrow, previously undefeated in the league and cup in December, was anything but outclassed. They looked dangerous on the break, but lacked sharp edges in front of goal.
Josh Gordon struck a first-half header just wide, but goalkeeper Ross Doohan comfortably landed a fourth straight clean sheet in the league.
