Antonio Conte hinted that Tanguy Ndombele must improve on the pitch to get Tottenham fans back into play after the midfielder was booed loudly during FA Cup third round victory over Morecambe.
Ndombele has struggled to make an impact since joining Spurs in a £ 55m deal in the summer of 2019.
He was awarded a starting spot against League One Morecambe fighters but once again failed to impress and was part of a triple change made by Spurs boss Conte per hour with his team behind by 1 -0.
Ndombele incurred the ire of the crowd showing no urgency to get off the field, slowly walking away to the other side and then heading straight down the tunnel as he was whistled.
Asked about the audience’s reaction to Ndombele after Spurs ultimately won 3-1, Conte said: “I was so focused on the pitch and in football you have to be good to try and change your mind if someone is disappointed in you.
“It also happened to me, as well as to a player, with someone who was disappointed with my performance.
“I think that during the match we have to look for the best solution to find something, above all I see that we are losing 1-0 and we have to try to change something.
“Especially when you have top level players on the bench. I decided to give Lucas (Moura) and (Harry) Kane some rest, but if you can change that and you have this type of player.”
After falling behind after 33 minutes, the Spurs needed a late show to reserve their seat in the fourth round.
Goals from Harry Winks and substitutes Lucas Moura and Harry Kane earned him the victory.
“For most of the match we struggled,” said Conte.
“We had to score and we had the opportunity to score very early. Then when you concede a goal from a set piece, for sure, the mood and your opponent start to feel that they can beat you.
“We have always fought to be creative and in the end we have to be disappointed because we can do much better.”
Conte also revealed that Eric Dier has jumped with a minor injury and Sergio Reguilon has been resting.
The Spurs face a home game against Brighton in the fourth round.
