Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is recognized as the No. 1 of boxing, but who could become the biggest threat to the Mexican star? The jury delivered its verdict …
Canelo became the undisputed super-middleweight champion this year, extending his dominant era, and the king of four weights will now be looking for a new challenge in 2022.
But could the big pound-for-pound suffer a shock setback in a precarious move to cruiserweight, or a risky return to light heavyweight?
It’s fabulous that Canelo is challenging himself in every way, shape or form. For me personally, Canelo is a case for us to enjoy him while he’s here, because he’s a very, very special fighter.
Artur Beterbiev is a dangerous proposition to light heavyweights. He made it through a horrendous cut to continue his knockout streak against Marcus Browne this month on Sky Sports.
Oleksandr Usyk at cruiserweight could be Canelo’s biggest threat. Yes, Canelo can win a world title against Ilunga Makabu, but if Usyk comes back in weight then he has already proven himself the undisputed king in that division.
I can’t see anyone beat Canelo from middleweight to light heavyweight. Perhaps Beterbiev could be a threat, because he is a beast and has proven himself to be a good fighter.
If Canelo cannot control and discourage a fighter with his speed and power, he will receive a tougher test. It should be someone willing to take what Canelo has to land their punches.
Beterbiev could hurt Canelo and absorb what he comes back with.
Canelo could take a step forward in the weight divisions and could be his biggest threat. I think there are fighters too big and too powerful for Canelo. It’s hard to bet against Canelo, but yes, there are some people out there who are still dangerous for him.
There is also a question mark about his first fight against Gennadiy Golovkin, which ended in a draw. GGG is still potentially a threat if Canelo returns to middleweight again.
One of the best light heavyweight fighters could be a threat to Canelo and certainly the heavyweight. You never know if Oleksandr Usyk could return to cruiserweight, but he has his eyes on the biggest division in the world, which is the heavyweight division. But I think Usyk would beat Canelo. It’s too big and too good for him.
When Canelo moved up to light heavyweight, he wisely chose his opponent Sergey Kovalev, who is nearing the final stages of his career. But Artur Beterbiev has a good chance of beating Canelo in a really good fight. I don’t think it will be one-sided, because Beterbiev is a strong light heavyweight, he is number 1 in the division and a real threat.
Size and weight are the biggest threat to Canelo. If he goes to cruiserweight, they are great opponents up there. He could fight Ilunga Makabu and people suggest he’s an easy opponent for Canelo, but he’s not. Makabu can punch. I know he’s not the biggest of the guys, but he’s still pretty big, he hits hard and he’s tough.
But if Canelo goes to the light highs, I think he can beat Artur Beterbiev, really. Dmitry Bivol is someone who could prove quite embarrassing for him. Bivol is a sharpshooter, he has good legs, which could be a challenge for Canelo. Those light heavyweight guys are a threat, but I still think Canelo can find a way to win.
Canelo could be his biggest threat. He may bite off more than he can chew by switching to cruiserweight. I, as a former weightlifter, am a little offended that this little man is making it to our weight division. Any cruise-worthy weight will think, ‘No, that’s not happening!’.
That’s why the likes of Oleksandr Usyk are willing to step back into cruiserweight to prove it. You will have a number of cruise weights such as Makabu, which are beatable. But then there are other cruise weights that Canelo should never beat in a million years. Canelo’s biggest threat could be himself.
It takes power to get Canelo’s respect, but I don’t think it will be enough. Canelo is so smart, he’s so good, and I don’t see anyone upset him, especially not super middleweight.
David Benavidez lingers between super-middleweight and lightweight. He is a very well educated fighter, but he needs to be more disciplined. You will need a lot of discipline for Canelo’s fight.
Light heavyweights like Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev would be a real test for Canelo.
He’s talking about fighting Ilunga Makabu at cruiserweight and Canelo probably beats him all day, but suddenly you’re in a different kind of fight. Usyk would be too big for him, but I doubt Usyk would ever go back to cruiserweight now.
