Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez ‘expressed interest’ in a fight with Artur Beterbiev, says Bob Arum: ‘He’s a risk-taker!’ | Boxing News

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez could turn his attention to the fearsome Artur Beterbiev for his next fight, says promoter Bob Arum.

Undefeated Beterbiev will be putting his WBC and IBF light heavyweight titles on the line and his 100% knockout ratio against Marcus Browne, live on Sky Sports from 1 Saturday morning.

He could become a target for Canelo, the pound for pound superstar who is climbing through the weight divisions in search of more daring challenges.

Top Rank promoter Arum, representing Beterbiev, insisted that Canelo showed interest: “Yes. I know he would.

“Eddy Reynoso is a great coach and is very close to Canelo.

“I have known Canelo quite well, since he was young.

“He expressed interest in fighting Beterbiev or Joe Smith Jr.

“I’m looking forward to May or September, the two dates that Canelo loves to fight, that he would fight one of those light heavyweights.”

Canelo is already a four-weight world champion and has received permission from the WBC to enter a fifth division to challenge cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu.

But with Makabu also having to defend the WBC title against Thabiso Mchunu, Arum has raised doubts that Canelo can move forward with a troubled bout.

“I think they will have to abandon it,” he said.

Canelo has already entered the light heavyweight division to knock out Sergey Kovalev and clinch a WBO belt.

But facing Beterbiev, who is at his peak and has eliminated every opponent he has ever met, is a far more difficult task.

Beterbiev proved his threat by stopping Oleksandr Gvozdyk, who was also an unbeaten world champion at the time.

“Canelo takes risks and that makes him so popular,” Arum said.

“It would be a huge fight because the betting action would go both ways.

“Some will say that Beterbiev is too big and powerful. Others will say that Canelo is special and can handle everyone.

“It is one of the greatest fights in boxing.”
