Will Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele win the majors in 2022?

The 2021 golf calendar has produced historic victories, first time winners and broken records, but what can we expect from the men’s main program in the coming year?

Hideki Matsuyama will return to Augusta National as reigning champion, a year after becoming the first Asian Masters winner last April, while Rory McIlroy will have another chance to complete his golf career in the Grand Slam.

Phil Mickelson became the oldest major winner in history with his PGA Championship win on Kiawah Island, while world number 1 Jon Rahm secured his first major title with his dramatic US Open success in Torrey Pines.

The Open celebrates its 150th anniversary next summer in St Andrews, with the Old Course hosting the event for the first time since 2015 and Collin Morikawa reigning golfer of the year after lifting the Claret Jug at Royal St George’s.

Who will win the men’s majors in 2022? We asked Sky Sports Golf presenter Nick Dougherty to offer his predictions …

The Masters – Rory McIlroy

I am quite an emotional person so I will continue to believe that he will win in Augusta, and there is no reason why he will not. I honestly think he’s found that sweet spot of wanting to find some improvement, but he also has the prospect of knowing he has his own way of doing it.

I feel like there have been a few years where he has been chasing trying to replicate some of the traits he likes in other players’ games, such as the strengthening of his club face that we see in many of the top players, all in the quest to elevate himself above. above all, but I think he’s starting to find his game again.

I like what he said recently about his performances and I like the work he did with Brad Faxon. I expect he will win again at the start of the season and that would bring him to the Masters in great shape. He had a chance there, let’s be honest. He has a good record at Augusta National, only he hasn’t finished the job yet.

PGA Championship – Viktor Hovland

His career has been phenomenal so far, with three PGA Tour wins, one European Tour victory and that Hero World Challenge victory just before Christmas. We’ve seen what it’s capable of, so the next step is obvious.

When you look at all the tools he has, I think it’s inevitable that he’s in the fray for more big tournaments in the years to come. Winning bigger events on the PGA Tour and a major win are both very much in his future.

Viktor Hovland closed the year as number 8 in the world

He is getting close to Collin Morikawa with the quality of his long play and is phenomenal from the tee. It has play from tee to green and is much better around the greens than it used to be, so we can expect it to come forward and compete in the main arena.

US Open – Xander Schauffele

The last five times Schauffele has played at the US Open, he has finished fifth, sixth, third, fifth and seventh. He’s won four times on the PGA Tour and has a great record in the majors without winning one yet, so this could be his calling.

The Open – Jordan Spieth

Spieth finished second at the Open in 2021 and played well the last time it was held in St Andrews in 2015. Given the nature of his game, with his tidy iron game and brilliant putt, I feel he will have a chance around that golf course.

St Andrews, to me, is still one of the most misunderstood golf courses. When you look at the caliber of the players who have won around the Old Course and the way they have plotted around there, you could easily see someone with the artistry that Spieth possesses lifting the Claret Jug again.

Jordan Spieth is a three-time major champion, having followed two wins in 2015 by winning the Open in 2017

The secret of the Old Course is not hitting the left side to lose the bunkers, there are times when it plays in favor of the true thinker. Spieth will fit in just fine with that layout.
