Richard Riakporhe must wait for Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s decision before finalizing his world title plans, promoter Ben Shalom said.
Riakporhe flattened Olanrewaju Durodola to win the WBC cruiserweight silver belt and set up a future fight against world champion Ilunga Makabu.
But the WBC approved pound-for-pound phenom Canelo’s request to boldly enter a fifth weight division by challenging Makabu.
“Much of the cruiserweight division is waiting to see what Canelo does,” said BOXXER promoter Shalom.
“He’s the biggest star in boxing and every governing body will make room for him.
“The whole division – Riakporhe, Lawrence Okolie, Mairis Briedis – must wait for him.
“Richard is only looking in one direction: towards a world title.
“We are considering what the course could be. Expect to see the news pretty quickly.”
Undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo also has the chance to venture into the light heavyweight division to take on IBF and WBC title holder Artur Beterbiev, in what would probably be his toughest task.
“He showed me interest,” said Top Rank’s Canelo Bob Arum, who promotes Beterbiev.
Arum expects Canelo to “drop” plans to challenge Makabu, which would give Riakporhe the green light to prosecute the Congolese title holder.
Riakporhe’s return to the ring is scheduled for March or April by BOXXER.
“He had a great year announcing himself back on the scene,” said Shalom.
“He is vying for the world title, particularly with the WBC. We are waiting to see what happens with Makabu and Canelo.
“There are a lot of opportunities in that division.
“Even nationally, which is a scene Richard has already been through, it’s a really exciting division. We saw Isaac Chamberlain win.”
