Recruiting Rumor Mill: Early Signing Period approaches

There are only two days left to the early subscription period, and the last weekend of official visits is in the books. Here are all the latest news and rumors coming Wednesday:

Dan LanningThe transition from Georgia defensive coordinator to Oregon manager “changes absolutely nothing,” according to a source close to Bradenton (Fla.) Five-star defensive tackle IMG Academy. The Bulldogs got two engagements from Alexander actually during this cycle as he committed, disengaged and reappeared and there appears to be no drama along the way.

The rumor now is that USC is emerging as the undisputed leader and if Donte Williams it remains personal so it could be a foregone conclusion. Branch made his last visit to USC this past weekend, and while the state of Ohio cannot possibly be counted, it appears that Trojans – and Lincoln Riley and his staff – could end up with Branch in their recruiting class.

While Miami shot Manny Diaz and replaced it with Mario cristobal, teams saw a chance to get more involved with Brown as Florida, Arkansas and others made efforts. But after a visit with Cristobal and now his trip to Miami, every indication is that the three-star high QB of Valdosta (Ga.) Lowndes will stay with the Canes.

After Brent Venables Left to take the job in Oklahoma, Campbell has given up on his engagement with Clemson, but the four-star outside linebacker still plans to sign on Wednesday. Alabama is putting the all-out press while Campbell was in Tuscaloosa over the weekend, spent time with Alabama commits Jeremiah Alexander and Nick Saban as well as Crimson Tide could now be considered the team to beat. Texas A&M is right there too and he’s visiting too. The Aggies were one of the most involved schools before he got involved with Clemson in the first place.

Figuring out Coleman’s future destination was difficult, but it looks like it could be Miami or the state of Florida, unless there’s a surprise on the way. The change of coach at Oregon hurts the Ducks and Coleman is rumored not to be in love with Eugene as much as other places. The visit to Miami this weekend went really well and he could end up playing for the same coaches he would in Oregon but Miami now. The state of Florida has been a huge pillar and coach Mike Norvell made him a big priority too, so it feels like a two-team battle right now.

Goodwin will have a lot to think about and is planning a final announcement on signing day that by no means excludes Kentucky, but the next 48 hours could be interesting. A final visit to the state of Michigan went really well this past weekend as the huge four-star offensive lineman loved the honesty of the coaches and what Mel Tucker is building in East Lansing. Goodwin sees a Big Ten title in the works. The other team to watch is Texas A&M because he loved College Station and is absolutely fascinated by his opportunity there.

A few weeks ago, Fort Myers (Fla.) Four-star cornerback Bishop Verot told me he was “uncertain” about Miami. But the word is that all these concerns have been resolved now that Mario Cristobal has taken over. The Canes may have completely enveloped Graves during his weekend visit, although other teams have tried in the past few weeks.

Green has been something of a frontrunner for this Texas A&M recruiting class after engaging with the Aggies last January and has a list of goals to close with that is pretty impressive. And there’s at least a fair chance that many of them will end up at College Station. Kelvin Banks was on it, but not anymore after committing to Texas, but Green is still focused on getting Kam Dewberry, Denver Harris, Trevonte ‘Citizen, Harold Perkins, Shemar Stewart, Enai White, and Kiyaunta Goodwin.

After the disengagement from the state of Florida, Kelly was rumored to want to stay closer to home, but then uncertainty in Miami stalled those plans. That could be until Mario Cristobal got the job and then made the four-star defense of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Dillard a top priority. Cristobal has made no secret of his interest in Kelly’s landing as South Florida prospects will be a priority and momentum is headed in that direction.

Four-star outside linebacker / defensive end from Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman had a busy weekend with trips to both USC and Miami. Trojans weren’t seen as a contender, but in recent weeks they have completely risen on Moss’ list and are now in the running. Moss was very much in the throes of Oregon prior to Mario Cristobal’s move to Miami and it will be interesting to see if the Hurricanes could steal him. Don’t even count the state of Arizona, because he was there recently when he was supposed to see Oregon, so the Sun Devils could be sneaky here.

There may be rumors that Nolen has turned to Tennessee, but my sources don’t believe this and think he’s as stuck with Texas A&M as possible. He and his family have become so familiar with College Station and love it, Nolen is a very active recruiter for the Aggies and the class that Texas A&M is putting together especially in defense is something that is attracting Nolen to College Station even more. . In a recruiting full of twists and turns, along the way it could be boring on Nolen’s part. Texas A&M will take it.

A delay managed by LSU’s new assistant coach Frank Wilson definitely made an impact because Wilson’s message to family recently was that he’s back in Baton Rouge and they want to take their time and do it right, but Alabama is still the team to beat for the four star receiver . During the weekend visit, Preston witnessed the presentation of the Heisman Trophy won by Alabama QB Bryce Young and perhaps nothing could be more impactful than that.

Miami got the tight end four star to visit over the weekend and this might be monumental for the Canes, but the feeling is that it may have been just a nice visit to South Florida before staying with Alabama on the day of the signature. Skinner may be preparing to throw a stunner, but all indications are that the Crimson Tides are sitting comfortably in his recruit.

Tennessee and Ole Miss, among others, are racing former Florida contractor CJ Smith, but the team to watch on the last leg is Georgia. Orlando (Fla.) Star Bishop Moore was there last weekend, the Bulldogs clearly know how to close, and elite speed like Smith’s is needed in Athens. Nothing is finalized yet, but Georgia looks stronger.

Everyone will have to wait for Stewart’s decision – and it could mean things will be mixed up in the coming months. Opa Locka (Fla.) Defensive four-star Monsignor Pace waiting to sign until February is seen as good news for Miami, who now has time to establish a better relationship with him and sell the program under Cristobal but Texas A&M he is still seen as a very strong contender even with Georgia.

Wilson doesn’t talk much, so it’s hard to know for sure, but the feeling is that four-star safety in Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy had a great visit to Florida this weekend, but that Georgia remains the team to beat. The Gators made a great shot, but Georgia have been in the lead for so long and Dan Lanning’s departure is something to watch, but it hasn’t hurt the recruiting class at all. The expectation is still Georgia for Wilson.
