Rafa Benitez wants January additions to Everton squad but admits Goodison Park club will have to be careful | Football News

Rafa Benitez wants “two or three” new signings in the transfer window in January, but admits that Everton will again have to “watch out” for the transfer market.

Benitez was very limited in his spending over the summer, although the signing of top scorer Demarai Gray from Bayer Leverkusen proved to be a master stroke at just £ 1.7 million while Andros Townsend and Salomon Rondon entered on a free transfer.

However, with injuries proving problematic in the first half of the season, especially up front where England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has only played in three games, Benitez’s side enter 2022 with a modest 15th place and he needs more fresh blood.

Everton manager Rafael Benitez says his side are ready to face Brighton on Sunday after suffering “problems” with Covid and injuries in recent weeks.

Everton will play for the first time since 16 December on Sunday when they face Brighton at Goodison with Calvert-Lewin likely to return to the squad, and so Benitez can turn his attention to adding to his squad.

The Toffees have been extensively linked with Dynamo Kyiv left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko to fill a position that proved problematic in Lucas Digne’s prolonged non-injury absence.

Benitez said: “We are working hard. We are trying to find goals to improve the team. Everyone knows how difficult January is.

“Everyone is a little worried about Covid, nobody wants to spend too much money. It’s complicated. I’m pretty confident we’ll do two or three things.

“We are in contact with the clubs, but it’s not just me, the board is (also) looking for the right options.

“Not everyone has a lot of money to spend, so we have to be careful when buying, selling or lending players.

“I knew what we were looking for in August, we are working to find the right players for the present and for the future.

“We are trying to make sure we have a chance to improve. What can (the fans) expect? Two or three players and players who want to be here.”
