Perfect return for Paul Townend as Blue Lord wins at Fairyhouse | Racing News

Blue Lord provided Irish champion jockey Paul Townend with the perfect comeback on his first mount recovering from injury when he won the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Chase at Fairyhouse.

Townend had been out of action since dislocating his shoulder in a fall in Listowel in September.

He had hoped to return this past weekend for a Willie Mullins-trained heavy gun series, but has given himself an extra week just to be on the safe side.

Blue Lord (8-11 favorite), who would have been second in the supreme novice hurdle at last season’s Cheltenham Festival but for falling last when he was well away from runner-up, had clearly done a lot of home schooling.

He barely missed a step on his way to victory, seeing teammate El Barra five and a half lengths.

“It’s nice to be back and especially with people like him,” Townend said.

“He has been very direct and loves the fence. He has matured a lot both physically and mentally.

“He did very well over the summer and is looking for the next fence to tackle it.”
