Nicholls’ trio headline nine contenders for King George glory | Racing News

Clan Des Obeaux and Frodon lead Paul Nicholls’ bid for 13th success in the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase.

Clan Des Obeaux is aiming for third triumph after taking honors in 2018 and 2019, but was third just 12 months ago behind teammate Frodon. Saint Calvados, who was fourth that day when with coach Harry Whittington, completes the Nicholls trio.

The Des Obeaux clan hasn’t raced since winning the Punchestown Gold Cup in April, but Frodon has been in winning form lately, lifting champion Chase of Down Royal eight weeks ago. Saint Calvados, absent since February, made their debut with the Nicholls shirt.

The last Irish lineup winner was in 2005 through Kicking King, following his win in the Cheltenham Gold Cup earlier that year.

Minella Indo aims to complete the same double for coach Henry de Bromhead on the back of third place behind Frodon at Down Royal upon his reappearance.

Willie Mullins provides the other two Irish contenders in Asterion Forlonge and Tornado Flyer as the Closutton host attempts to win the three-mile feature for the second time since Florida Pearl in 2001.

Nicky Henderson has three King George’s to his credit and this time he is two-handed with Chantry House and Mister Fisher.

Lostintranslation was stopped in the last two heats of this race, but Colin Tizzard’s charge showed he was back in good shape when he landed the 1965 Chanelle Pharma Pursuit in Ascot last month.

Jeremy Scott’s Dashel Drasher was the only retirement in the final declaration stage.
