The Sale Sharks will not be in action on Boxing Day

Hopes for a full Boxing Day program in the Gallagher Premiership were dashed after Sale’s trip to Newcastle was canceled due to a Covid-19 outbreak within the Sharks squad.

Premiership Rugby announced on Christmas Eve that 28 players and six staff from nine teams had tested positive and that all Boxing and December 27 games would go ahead as planned.

But the Sharks confirmed on Christmas Day that a further round of tests had found positive results and, as a result, a “significant number” of their team had been excluded from the trip to Kingston Park.

The decision to cancel the game was made after a consultation between the Professional Game Board (PGB) Testing Oversight Group and the Sharks, with the arrival of the agreement the risk was too great for the meeting to take place safely.

A Premiership Rugby spokesperson said: “Our priority is the health and safety of all involved with Sale Sharks and Newcastle Falcons and we will give the clubs all the support they need. We wish all concerned a full and full rapid healing.

“Neither Premiership Rugby nor the club will name any of the players or staff involved and we ask everyone to respect their privacy.”

Premiership Rugby has confirmed that a panel will be convened to determine the allocation of points and a further announcement will be made in due course.
