N.C. A&T Fashion Design Student Helps Create Urban Outfitters HBCU Collection | Business

EAST GREENSBORO, NC – (December 17, 2021) International lifestyle retailer Urban Outfitters (UO) launched a special capsule collection historically Black College and University (HBCU) this week, featuring designs created with selected HBCU summer interns including North Carolina Agricultural and State Technical University.

From idea to creation, the students worked with UO’s purchasing team to design a 24-piece collection of clothing and lifestyle that celebrated the culture and community of their respective schools called the UO Summer Class ’21 Collection, the first in its gender.

“Being able to share our resources with HBCU talent and work together with these students creatively while developing their own product has made the Summer Class enriching not only for our students, but for every UO employee who has had. way to be part of the program, ”says Dalila Shannon, Divisional Merchandising Manager of UO Women and mentor of the Summer Class.

U’lia Hargrove, a fashion merchandising and design and supply chain management student, worked closely with the UO Women’s Sweater Team as a purchasing intern.

“It was my first time in a big city like Philadelphia,” said the Henderson, North Carolina native. “We got to participate in photo shoots, meet the CEO and design every aspect of the collection for our HBCU. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Urban Outfitters to educate their client base and bring light to our schools. ”

The clothing includes Champion sweatshirts and long-sleeved shirts with original student graphics. For NC A&T, there are six pieces including a premium letterman jacket made by Ebbets Field Flannel that represents student interpretations of the collegiate staple.

Elizabeth Newcomb Hopfer, Ph.D., associate professor of fashion merchandising and design, is honored that one of her students has been selected to participate in the UO Summer Class 2021.

“This experience will enable her to shine in the brighter and more inclusive fashion industry of the future, giving her and other Summer Class attendees the chance to celebrate the historic milestones of NC A&T and other HBCUs,” she said.

The collection, officially authorized by CLC, will be available for purchase exclusively on urbanutfitters.com and include a charitable donation to the students’ respective alma mater.

The collection also includes designs for Clark Atlanta University by CAU Dacia Redmond students Jalen Bradford and Jasmine Logan and for Howard University by Howard student Janae Claxton.
