Previously, Miss Virginia Camille Schrier was crowned Miss America in 2019, but held the title for another year due to the cancellation of the 2020 contest by COVID-19.
This is the third contest since Miss America eliminated the costume part of the contest; today, contestants dazzle the judges with a portion of live talent, a portion of evening gowns and a round of interviews.
Before being crowned Miss America 2022, Emma also spoke on the show about her older brother, who has Down syndrome, and her involvement with the Special Olympics since she was eligible to be an athlete.
As for her 12-year-old self-advice, the winner reflected: “Don’t take life so seriously. Let yourself go. Have fun, because you only live once. That’s my life’s motto: YOLO.”
2021 Miss America is now streaming on Peacock.
(E! And Peacock are both part of the NBCUniversal family.)
