Mikaela Mayer has “real potential” to be one of US boxing’s biggest stars and could even make her UK debut in 2022, said Top Rank president Todd DuBoef.
The unbeaten American unified the IBF and WBO super featherweight championships in her most recent battle against Maiva Hamadouche and is aiming for the undisputed title.
But her journey to the top hasn’t always been guaranteed, says DuBoef of Top Rank, her promoter: “We were worried about what to do in the women’s category. We had just dabbled, a decade earlier.
“But she sold it to me.
“He has a personality outside the ring, but inside the ring I wasn’t sure.
“Then his last fight was so sensational. He delivered in so many fights.
“None is the face [of boxing] but Mikaela is an important part, particularly in the United States. In the UK and Ireland there are Savannah Marshall and Katie Taylor.
“Mikaela and Claressa Shields have done a lot in the United States.
“After a performance like in her last fight? Mikaela grabs you. She has real potential in America and I’d also like to take her to the UK.”
Mayer believes there will soon be changes in the upper echelons of women’s boxing.
“She’s not Katie Taylor anymore,” he said of the No. 1 best fighter. 1 pound-for-pound in the world.
“I haven’t seen her perform in her latest fights.
“It makes me sad because I want to fight with Katie. I would go up to 135lbs to challenge her.
“I want to catch her before she declines. She’s had a great career.”
Mayer’s other super featherweight champions are Alycia Baumgardner (WBC), who knocked out Britain’s Terri Harper, and Choi Hyun-Mi (WBA).
Mayer said of Baumgardner: “For some reason, he has this right that ‘it’s his time’.
“I came for Harper when he had the belt. Now I come for Baumgardner.
“It’s not personal. She’s trying to make it like high school, saying ‘you’re jealous.’ No, I just wanted the biggest fight possible.
“He didn’t say my name after winning his belt. He doesn’t want to fight me.”
Mayer expects her two division rivals to clash first and said, “Where’s Choi? She’s not active. She’s held the belt and is the longest reigning champion in women’s boxing, but she doesn’t put it on the line.” .
“She is not a top player.
“I see Baumgardner win. Two Americans for the undisputed title are a great battle.”
Mayer’s star shone in a historic out-of-the-ring appearance alongside Crystina Poncher as the first all-female boxing commentary team.
But it’s inside the ring, where he plans to return in March and hopes to become undisputed in 2022, that Mayer is causing a stir.
