Max Verstappen Wins the F1 World Title in Most Dramatic Fashion Possible

  • Max Verstappen is the Formula One world champion after a dramatic race in Abu Dhabi.
  • The Dutchman overtook Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the final race of the season to win.
  • His win will be marred in controversy by a controversial last-minute call from match control.

Max Verstappen won the Formula 1 world championship in the most dramatic way imaginable in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

The Red Bull driver overtook his championship rival Lewis Hamilton on the final lap to win the most hard-fought title race in decades with the least margin.

After missing the Dutchman in the first corner, Hamilton looked poised for an eighth world title with Mercedes showing a pace advantage over the Red Bulls, but a late safety car proved to be his undoing.

After Williams’ Nicholas Latifi crash in the 54th of 58 laps, a safety car was deployed during which Verstappen pitted for a fresh pair of tires.

This meant that the race would likely end in one of two circumstances. The first would be that the race would end in a safety car as the lapped cars between Hamilton and Verstappen would be allowed to overtake. The second option is that these cars would not be allowed to overtake and Verstappen would have to fight them to catch Hamilton on the final lap.

Eventually, the lapped cars between Hamilton and Verstappen were cleared to quickly pass the safety car before the start of the final lap, meaning Verstappen simply had to overtake Hamilton on the final lap to be named world champion.

With fresher tires, Hamilton couldn’t do much to stop the Dutchman from eventually overtaking the seven-time world champion on the way to his first world title.

Mercedes has complained furiously and the debate will no doubt continue to rumble, but Red Bull and the sport’s new world champion won’t care.

It wasn’t the first crash of the race with the two title contenders almost getting close, resulting in Hamilton going off the track. Red Bull disputed, but the stewards decided Hamilton had not gained an advantage.

Subsequently, Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez produced a great guide to keep Hamilton at bay. After both Verstappen and Hamilton had pitted for new tires, Perez was leading the race with the task of slowing Hamilton down and giving Verstappen a chance to recover.
