Man Utd transfer news: Axel Tuanzebe set to join Napoli on loan and cut short Aston Villa spell | Football News

Axel Tuanzebe, the Manchester United defender, is close to finalizing the loan transfer to Napoli.

Talks between United and Napoli are underway, but Tuanzebe is expected to end his loan period at Aston Villa and move to the Italian club.

The deal is likely to be a loan until the end of the season, with Napoli not being able to make the transfer permanent.

Tuanzebe has only started six Premier League games with Villa this season and was left out of the squad for Sunday’s game in Brentford.

Steven Gerrard, the Villa manager, said: “The Axel situation – there is a lot of media noise if it goes on. We will know in the next couple of days.”

Tuanzebe – who still has 18 months on his contract with United – arrived at Villa in August and was expected to remain at the club until the end of the 2021/22 season.

However, since Gerrard replaced Dean Smith in November, Tuanzebe has only played eight minutes of football for the Villa, with Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings as the manager’s favorite center-back duo.

But despite Tuanzebe’s lack of playing time, Gerrard said earlier this week that he wanted to keep the 24-year-old at Villa Park.

“It’s all in the hands of Ax and Manchester United,” said the former Liverpool captain. “We want it here. We would be happy to keep it.

Speaking earlier this week, Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard said he wanted to keep United defender Tuanzebe on loan at least until the end of the season.

“We don’t just see it as a loan until the end of the season. It’s something we want to explore further. Let’s just hope we have this opportunity.

“He is a player that we like very much and we would like him to stay at least until the end of the season. Axel is his own man and will want to make his decision.

“Obviously it is owned by Manchester United which we all have to respect. I hope he wants to be part of that.

“In terms of what he has given on a daily basis, his leadership and training levels have been really strong and he is pushing to play.”
