Kieran Trippier: Newcastle plan to make Atletico Madrid defender first of four January signings | Football News

Newcastle are hoping to make Kieran Trippier the first of at least four new signings this month.

The Magpies made a formal offer to Atletico Madrid for Trippier on New Year’s Day and are planning to make it the first purchase under their new owners next week.

Eddie Howe is hoping the England defender’s potential arrival will be followed by at least three more new arrivals as he tries to keep Newcastle in the Premier League.

Trippier greeted Atletico fans at the Wanda Metropolitano after playing the full 90 minutes of Sunday’s 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano.

After the match, Diego Simeone, Atletico coach, said: “As I said the other day, it always depends on the player what can happen.

“We want him and we hope he will stay with us but today it is clear that when a player wants to leave he cannot be detained.”

Howe worked with Trippier while leading Burnley, signing right-back from Manchester City in January 2012 after an impressive loan spell at Turf Moor.

Trippier joined Atletico Madrid in 2019 after four years at Tottenham and helped them win the La Liga title last season. He was also named in the La Liga team of the year.

The 31-year-old won 35 appearances for England and made his debut in last summer’s Euro 2020 final against Italy, setting Luke Shaw’s first goal.

Newcastle are 19th in the Premier League with only one win in 19 games this season. Howe hopes Trippier can help support a defense that conceded 42 goals, the highest in the league alongside Norwich.

Analysis: Trippier would bring leadership, experience and quality to Newcastle defense

Peter Smith of Sky Sport:

Newcastle set an unwanted record in 2021: the 80 goals conceded were the most scored in a calendar year by a Premier League team. This season, in the first 19 games, they have suffered 42: only eight teams have ever suffered more in that phase of the Premier League.

This loss proved costly, with Newcastle losing more points from winning positions than any other team this campaign.

Add in the fact that Newcastle have conceded more shots on goal than any other Premier League team over this period and the picture is clear: this is a defense that desperately needs reinforcements in January.

Eddie Howe – who hasn’t been able to orchestrate a significant improvement in that department since taking over from Steve Bruce – turned to a familiar face for help.

Howe coached Trippier for two seasons in the league when they were both at Burnley 10 years ago. Trippier has since become one of Europe’s best right-backs, reaching a Champions League final with Tottenham before winning La Liga last season with Atletico Madrid, where Diego Simeone’s manager improved his defensive skills. .

Trippier’s reliability and creativity on crosses and set pieces have also made him a favorite of England manager Gareth Southgate, who spoke to him in key moments of the Three Lions race at the Euro 2020 final last summer. before handing him the captain’s armband for World Cup qualification with Andorra in October.

If Newcastle can bring him to St James’ Park, Trippier will add leadership, experience and quality to the rear. Newcastle will need a reinforcement in other areas as well, but it would be a transfer that would raise their hopes of ensuring the Premier League’s survival.
