The mom-of-two explained that while many people thought she was honored for taking care of her husband Derek Draper after her battle against Covid, she was actually chosen for broadcasting, journalism and charity services.

Kate told Susanna and Richard: “There have been some comments since it was announced by people saying, ‘Why do you have it? I take care of my loved one.'”

He continued: “You feel like, ‘ooh … I don’t have it to take care of Derek.’ It’s for broadcasting and also for charity work. “

He then recalled the moment he found out about the exciting news, explaining that recipients first receive a letter saying that they have been nominated for an honor and that they must respond by saying whether or not they will accept.

Kate explained: “Derek has been in and out of the hospital recently, so I was with him and my sister-in-law was in charge of opening letters that looked official.”

“He opened it and said, ‘oh God, I shouldn’t have opened it, it’s really exciting, you should have opened it yourself.'”

Susanna and her temporary co-host Richard then told Kate how proud they were of her, explaining that the little backlash she had suffered was in no way justified.

Richard told Kate: “Let’s conclude by saying this: there have been some comments, but often when someone gets a title, there is heated debate. There is no significant debate to be had about ‘Kate Garraway MBE.’ “

Susanna added: “Congratulations Kate. It is absolutely deserved. You’ve been an extraordinarily important voice for very personal and painful reasons for your family, but it’s great that you have that MBE. “
