Rangers are close to signing versatile young James Sands from New York City.
The 21-year-old is expected to move to Ibrox on loan for 18 months, with a redemption option included in the deal.
Sands – who can play as a central defender or a defensive midfielder – was a key member of former Celtic manager Ronny Deila’s squad who won the MLS Cup for the first time in club history last month.
Since making his MLS debut in 2017, Sands has played 65 games and also made seven appearances for the United States national team.
He appeared in all six matches during the 2021 Gold Cup when the United States was crowned champions before playing against Honduras in a World Cup qualifier.
The Scottish Premiership squad of the season so far
After an eventful and unpredictable start to the Scottish Premiership season, Kris Boyd and Andy Walker have chosen their campaign teams so far.
Rangers are ahead of their Celtic rivals by six points, but only two players on each side are featured in Walker’s XI, while Boyd has selected three from both halves of the Old Firm.
The pair only agreed on four selections and also opted for different lineups, with players from Dundee United, Hearts, Hibernian, Motherwell and Ross County as well.
