Irish Arkle next for Ferny Hollow after Leopardstown win | Racing News

Irish Arkle will likely be next on Ferny Hollow’s agenda after starring in a double for Cheveley Park Stud on the opening day of the Christmas Festival in Leopardstown.

The six-year-old Willie Mullins-trained boy beat esteemed teammate Appreciate It in Champion Bumper and got the better of Bob Olinger in a first hurdle in 2020, but missed much of last season due to injury.

He scored a win on his return to action and chased his debut in Punchestown earlier in the month and followed the Grade One Racing Post Novice Chase.

Cheveley Park director Richard Thompson said, “As Willie later said, Ferny Hollow was exceptional that day.

“Being off track for over a year, coming back and winning and then going out three weeks later and winning a Grade One – giving 13 pounds to a very good filly (Riviere D’etel) – was fantastic.

“I have to admit that at one point I thought he was going to be beaten, but he really did.

“In the short term I think we will be looking at the Irish Arkle at the Dublin Racing Festival.”

Thompson was also delighted to see last season’s Champion Bumper hero, Sir Gerhard, successfully start his hurdling career on the same card as Leopardstown.

He looks ready to move up to Grade One sooner rather than later.

“It sounded like a class act, didn’t it,” Thompson added.

“I think we will also look at the Dublin Racing Festival with him.”
