There are moments in perfect celebrity style, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you desperately try to recreate at home. In “Great Outfits in Fashion History”, Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.
Alek Wek can command any room he enters, any walkway he goes down, any campaign he appears in. There is a reason why she is one of the most iconic supermodels in the world. Another: She has been a constant source of inspiration for outfits, from her original off-duty model style of the late 90s to her penchant for eye-catching and eye-catching red carpet dresses, like the electric slip dress she wore at the 2003 CFDA Awards.
Now, that year was particularly strong for the CFDA Awards, in terms of the all-time Great Outfits production. There was Jane Krakowski in a mint green embellished mini, Eve in a beloved runway look by Alexander McQueen, Renée Zellweger going big Hollywood in a vintage Carolina Herrera dress and evening gloves. Yet, even among so many memorable outfits, Wek’s lime green satin dress, with its draped neckline, open sides and high slit that opens onto a dazzled pin pinned to the hip, accessorized with a colorful print scarf jewel, strappy sandals and an embossed leather clutch – stole the show. Color alone is enough to turn heads, but Wek’s flawless fit and the confidence it brought us really make it.
This type of silhouette from the early 2000s is on trend right now, with brands like Blumarine making a lot of reference to them in new collections. Shop the Wek inspired slip dresses in the gallery below.
