Golden State’s Steph Curry breaks record, shows Jazz not elite

Curry is now breaking his 3-point record

Stephen Curry and the Warriors battled it out again on New Year’s Day, beating Donovan Mitchell and the Jazz, 123-116. In an effort to show Utah that they aren’t quite at Golden State level, Curry set another 3-point record by making a three in his 158th straight game. Curry set the record initially in November 2016, scoring a three in 157 consecutive games.

Every three Curry drains at this point is practically setting a record. This might not sound like a great achievement, but making at least one three-point try in every game for nearly two straight seasons twice is damn insane. Adding to the fact that Steph did it this second time during a global pandemic where nothing was the same overnight is even more incredible.

When Curry is done playing, there may not be a record of 3 points in the NBA record book that doesn’t have his name next to it. And yes, there are still a few out there just waiting to be taken over by Steph. The record for the highest 3-point percentage (45.4%) is held by Curry’s manager Steve Kerr and is likely out of reach at this point. Most of the three made in one game (14) are currently owned by the other splash sibling, Klay Thompson. Also, the highest number of three attempted in one career (7,429), now held by Ray Allen. Curry is just under 450 attempts to steal this record from Allen.

Along with a new record for Curry, the Warriors also sent a message to the Jazz, letting them know they are not at their level in the Wwestern Cconference. Utah is a good story, and they could come out of the first round of the playoffs only to be promptly rebounded from there like last year. The only difference is that they were the fugitives seed number one last season, and this year they will likely finish third at the conference.

The West will be Phoenix against Golden State in the conference finals. It’s just a question of who will have an advantage at home. I hate counting all the other teams, but right now it seems like these teams are running with a different frequency than anyone else in the West. The Suns and the Warriors are the only two teams that haven’t suffered double-digit losses yet and will likely be the top two teams with 30 wins this year. It is difficult to argue with what they have done so far in these first months of the season.
