The Boxing Day schedule in the Gallagher Premiership will go ahead as planned despite nine clubs reporting a total of 34 positive Covid-19 results in the latest round of lateral flow and PCR tests.

The league confirmed on Christmas Eve that despite a significant increase in testing, the numbers had actually dropped with 28 players and six staff members testing positive.

Those numbers dropped from 47 players and seven staff members, also from nine different clubs, in the period from 10 to 16 December.

Matches of week 11 include the undefeated league leaders Leicester Tigers traveling to the Bristol Bears while their closest pursuers, the Saracens, host Worcester, with five games taking place on Boxing Day and the Harlequins taking place on Boxing Day. host Northampton on Monday.

A Premiership Rugby statement read: “In consultation with the Professional Game Board, this week we conducted more than 4,600 COVID-19 tests at our Gallagher Premiership Rugby clubs.

“We would like to thank the medical staff, management and players of all of our clubs for their support and cooperation with our comprehensive testing program, not just this week but over the past 12 months.

“From Friday 17 December to Thursday 24 December inclusive, 4,626 lateral flow and PCR tests were performed by our players and management as part of the COVID-19 screening program.

“Of those that were tested 28 players and six staff members – from nine different clubs – tested positive.

“Our clubs will continue to test on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day before the Boxing Day and December 27 matches, but as things stand, all six Gallagher Premiership Rugby Round 11 matches are progressing as planned.

“Those who test positive and their close contacts are isolated and evaluated in line with guidelines agreed by the UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA).”
