Four-star safety Larry Turner-Gooden chooses Texas

THE LAST ONE

Last February, four-star security Larry Turner-Gooden committed to the state of Arizona. He said it was about the family as his former high school coach Chris Claiborne he was assistant to the Sun Devils and was also close to the position manager Chris Hawkins also.

But that commitment didn’t work out in the end and at the end of September the extraordinary Mission Hills (California) Alemany reopened its recruiting.

It was then that Texas, Colorado, Maryland, Penn State, USC and others joined the fray. On Saturday at the All-American Bowl, Turner-Gooden got involved with the Longhorns and one of the main reasons was because Turner-Gooden had such a great relationship with manager Steve Sarkisian for so long.

What made this commitment interesting is that Turner-Gooden has had excellent visits to other schools across the country and his decision could have taken many different paths.

Additionally, due to COVID-19 testing, Turner-Gooden was quarantined this week in San Antonio and has neither trained nor spoken to the media, so his was one of the more unpredictable decisions during the match.

ABOUT TEXAS

“They are telling me to come in and make a difference. The atmosphere and the fans (stand out). (Fans) are a big reason why you want to play out there. The staff are also great. Steve Sarkisian he’s a great guy. You know it will take you where you need to be. He is nice, relaxed. He keeps it 100 with you.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN

Recruiting the state of Texas will always be key to Sarkisian and his staff because there is so much talent grown in the house. But using recruiting contacts in the West will also be an advantage Sarkisian has against some others and that’s exactly what happened with Turner-Gooden and others in this class.

Four-star security comes from Southern California. So is committed Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy. The Longhorns also traveled to Arizona and Washington state for important engagements in this group. Home recruiting comes first, but harnessing that recruiting network in the West is another plus for Sarkisian as it brings together one of the best classes in the country.
