Every Look From JW Anderson Fall/Winter 2022

Concerns over the Omicron variant prompted JW Anderson’s runway show-become-rage to go without an audience, but the 51 looks from the brand’s Fall / Winter 2022 menswear and Pre-Fall 2022 womenswear collection promise the party would be was one for ages. Founder and Creative Director Jonathan Anderson delves into the colorful, childish and creative, resulting in playful fashion that stands out from typically serious menswear shows. Pointing out that the watchword for his latest presentation would be “silly,” Anderson’s new collection, which debuted on Sunday January 16 at 3pm Eastern Standard Time, meets and exceeds the expectations it set for itself. Everything from shoes and accessories to dresses, coats and pants carries the essence of a dream party to which we are all invited.

Shot at London’s Scala nightclub and music venue, the show lives up to its vibrant backdrop. The film of the collection begins with a clip of mist cascading down the red-painted steps of the club. At the same moment, DJ Pascal Moscheni’s cheerful and current mix, multi-hyphenated, transports you to the world of JW Anderson, in a way cooler than ours. Its soundtrack, which includes previously unreleased tracks by Turkish composer Berk Icli and Amsterdam DJ Young Marco, is the perfect accompaniment to Anderson’s vibrant designs.

While the items in this collection are noteworthy in themselves, it’s the accessories that are likely to grab your attention at first glance. A pigeon-shaped clutch bag and a knitted elephant bag reminiscent of Anderson’s calfskin elephant bags for Loewe are the first highlights. The more traditional bags are embellished with exaggerated edges and extravagant shapes, like a forest green bag in the shape of a fortune cookie. Other fun touches include a top made of colorful rubber bands, a sparkling gold polo with matching shorts, and a collared top with a dramatic asymmetrical hem.

As for women’s clothing, one-shoulder dresses reign supreme. Giving everything but “toga”, the silhouettes strike the perfect balance between captivating and simple, with the exception of the few that are emblazoned with a giant eye. The asymmetrical hems take up the masculine side of things, adding a note of continuity between the two. Sequins weave throughout the collection, from bright, multi-colored tops to a dazzling LBD and a zebra dress draped with rainbow hoop charms. The latter half of the show is dominated by baggy, skin-tight leather pants that take on an oily sheen.

Jonathan Anderson has played with unique show deliveries, from his first pandemic “Show in a Box” to “Show In a Book” and “Show In a Shirt” by Loewe. The new collection is no exception. Genderless and animated avatars modeling clothes and accessories from the Fall / Winter 2022 fashion show appeared in the windows of the Milanese luxury retailer Antonia. Anderson also showed a mix of IRL and digital details on Instagram, apparently inspired by the creative filters that entertained us during the pandemic.

Whether you’re interested in the pigeon meme clutch bag or see yourself coming out early in a sequined shirt, the JW Anderson Fall / Winter 2022 collection is chock full of inspiration for aspiring partygoers. In each piece, Anderson’s message is clear: the next time we’re allowed to free ourselves, we shouldn’t hold back.
