Everton vs Leicester postponed after Premier League grants visitors’ request to rearrange game | Football News

Leicester’s game at Everton on Tuesday was postponed after the Premier League accepted visitors’ request to rearrange the match.

Leicester informed the Premier League that they would not have enough first team players available to finish the match due to a combination of Covid cases, injuries and away players at the African Cup of Nations.

It is the second time that the game has been postponed: it was originally supposed to take place on December 19, but has been moved to January 11 due to Covid cases in the Leicester squad.

A Premier League statement read: “The council was able to make its decision before the match to clarify the affected clubs and their fans.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and disruption caused to fans who had planned to attend and watch the game and we are aware that the postponements will disappoint fans.

“The championship aims to provide as much clarity as possible, but unfortunately sometimes postponements have to be made at short notice, as safety is our priority.

“The council evaluates match postponement requests on a case-by-case basis, based on existing rules and guidelines adapted for postponement of Covid-19, implemented in light of the new Omicron variant.

Speaking after Leicester’s FA Cup win against Watford on Saturday, Rodgers said he was concerned about his lack of playing options.

“The board will assess a number of factors, including a club’s ability to field a team; the status, severity and potential impact of the Covid-19 outbreak on the club; and the ability of players to prepare and play in security, the match.

“The board also needs to consider the broader risks to the opposition and other people with whom club representatives may come in contact.”

Speaking after Leicester’s win over Watford in the FA Cup on Saturday – for which they were unable to name a full squad – manager Brendan Rodgers hinted at the arrival of requests to postpone Everton’s game.

“We have been stretched in terms of numbers and, for the integrity of the competition, we will evaluate where we are,” he said.

“You have personally seen the squad and the team we have. We have to come in and evaluate and see where we are in terms of players. We will take him from there.”

Rodgers added that the number of first team players currently unavailable to him meant he was facing a situation unlike anything he had ever experienced before.

“I’ve never had this before,” he said. “It is a unique situation.

“Covid, when it started, was difficult for us. The players were out and we couldn’t rest the ones who were playing, so they were overloaded.

“It’s great that some of them played, but there was a cost to that.”
