Meeting Davina McCall is always a pleasure. And with her infectious enthusiasm for health and wellness, if there’s anyone who can inspire us all to do a New Year’s detox or start an exercise regimen, it’s her.
Despite fracturing her ankle last year, the 54-year-old says: “I can’t wait to get back on the bike and recover my fitness. For everything else, if 2022 is as good as 2021, I will be happy ».
Another thing that makes Davina smile is the return to our screens for ITV’s new hit series The Masked Singer, in which warbling celebrities dress up in outlandish outfits so we can try to guess who they are. “It’s the best show I’ve ever been a part of,” he enthuses.

Davina is also overseeing her Own Your Goals fitness app – which has expanded to include more nutrition and menopause advice – and creating the Making The Cut podcast with boyfriend Michael Douglas, 47. It is fair to say that she is a busy woman!
Here, the star – who is mom of Holly, 20, Tilly, 18, and Chester, 15 – talks about aging, working closely with Michael and
the secrets behind The Masked Singer …
Hi, Davina! Are you as excited as we are about the return of The Masked Singer?
Are you joking? I’m so excited. It’s so funny. We never stop laughing. Celebrity costumes are great this season, but my guess is pretty silly this time around.
Are there any secrets behind the scenes you can share with us?
I’m not allowed behind the scenes! We are not allowed to go anywhere because everything is top secret.
But I can tell you that my colleague is Judge Jonathan [Ross] is the coolest person when it comes to dressing rooms.
Day one comes with a huge turntable, speaker system, and loads of vinyls. He makes his entire dressing room as if it were a home away from home.
I’m always so jealous and I think, “God, I have to do this next time.”
You look great. Do you think you have become more confident with age?
Getting older is great because you feel happier in your own skin. By the time you reach a certain age, chances are you’ll be in a job for a long time and be really good at it.
I’ve interviewed so many people now that I know I’m a safe pair of hands. At this age, we have all learned so much, although there is still a lot to learn.
So would you say it’s important to keep learning?
Now our children don’t want to talk to us anymore because they are older, we have all this extra good time in the evening to learn what we want to do next.
This is a great time when you can move from the bottom of the list to the top and start exercising again. Just start. It is never too late to start exercising. Never.
What do you teach your kids about fitness and body confidence?
I try not to even talk about their bodies. Even when I tell them, “Are you going to go out like this?”
I am speaking in terms of cold rather than “You have to cover your body”. We never talk about weight or weigh ourselves, it’s just not a thing. And in fact, since it is not a thing, it has never been a thing.
How important is well-being to you?
Taking care of yourself physically is one thing, but taking care of yourself mentally is another, and there are many things we can do to help ourselves.
I’m exercising my mind now, because that’s what I want to work on.
Do you have bass, and if so, are you looking for help for them?
Obviously. It is unrealistic to think that we can be happy all the time.
What I really like to try is, when people feel miserable, get them to ask themselves, “What’s the best way out of this?” I can’t stop you from getting miserable, but I can help you get out of it and find a way.
You hosted a big World Menopause Day event last fall. What prompted you to do it?
Of course, World Menopause Day is only one day a year, but I can’t imagine it even five years ago.
And if it was a thing, I wasn’t aware it was a thing, probably because we were all too embarrassed and nobody wanted to talk about it.
But now I feel it is something to celebrate, because it means freedom and freedom. It means the next stage, where you are freer from the burdens of obsession with yourself, lack of confidence and uncertainty about yourself.
Who inspires you when it comes to aging?
So many older women inspire me, like Joan MacDonald aka @TrainWithJoan. He’s on Instagram and started weight training at age 66.
She is now 70 and the fittest woman in her seventies I have ever seen. People say you shouldn’t be weight training at seventy – garbage! It is great for osteoporosis.
You know, you shouldn’t let anyone tell you what you should and shouldn’t do. Do what you like. I am going to grow old shamefully!
Any good anti-aging tips you can share with us?
Smile more. When you smile, no one really cares about your lines and wrinkles.
Smile as much as you can and don’t moan when you reach out to take off your shoes!
Walk faster, stop slowing down. Not only will it be good for your heart, it will also be good for your legs and exercise will make you look younger.
You recently expanded your website and app, Own Your Goals. Congratulations!
I have! There is a lot more on offer now. We have a ton of new trainers, all of which offer very different things.
The main thing is that we are covering different age groups – it might be of interest to someone in their twenties or sixties.
We want to make sure that we don’t exclude anyone from being able to train or find a way to tailor one of our workouts to their needs.
Can we ask how things are with your boyfriend, Michael?
We have an agreement that I don’t talk about our relationship, because our exes and our children don’t have the right to answer, so it’s not fair.
But I love podcasting with him. Basically it’s an extension of what we’ve always done as friends, which is recommending things to each other.
Even if we didn’t make money, which we haven’t done yet, we would still do it just because we like it.
People seem to really love it too. But I guess that’s the most public thing we do together.
We will never talk about us in an interview because somehow the words linger and we don’t want it. The podcast is pretty public, but our relationship isn’t and that will never change because we don’t need it.
