Commitment breakdown: Rivals250 LB Jaishawn Barham chooses South Carolina

Linebacker Jaishawn Barham prefers to speak on the pitch. Baltimore (Md.) Star St. Frances stayed out of the limelight during her recruitment, but college coaches across the country clamored to get her attention. Barham hasn’t made many visits, partly due to the long period of death caused by the pandemic, but has made four official visits this season. Penn State, South Carolina, Maryland, and Oklahoma took him and his family to campus for the red carpet treatment.

Ultimately, South Carolina won because of their need for linebackers, how comfortable Barham was in that environment during his visit, and his long-term relationship with MarShawn Lloyd that dates back to when they were teammates. in Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha.

Barham is a big and explosive linebacker who can cover a lot of ground for his size. He has good instincts and has no problem finding the ball carrier. Barham is a physical tackler who can cause fumble or drop catcher passes. It does a good job of interrupting running backs, tight ends or receivers while they are in their path. Barham can overwhelm the linesmen as they try to block him during running plays or slip away from them using his athleticism. It does a great job in the blitz and is particularly effective in entering the backfield when it comes off the edge.

Getting Barham aboard is a big win for Shane Beamer and his staff. Gamecocks need more playmakers on the defensive side of the ball and Barham has a lot of potential. There was a consensus earlier in Barham’s recruiting that he would stay closer to home for college with Maryland or Penn State as the favorites, but that didn’t stop manager Beamer and his staff from pursuing the highly rated linebacker. Shane Beamer’s attitude and personality have won over Barham’s family and that must be encouraging for long-term South Carolina fans.
