SARASOTA, Fla. – This place takes you back to simpler times, when men and women dressed up.
It was a time when fashion stood out. It can be found at Canned Ham Vintage in Sarasota.
“The thing we hear most from customers is that we are a ‘time capsule.’ So, they walk in and say, ‘I feel like I’m in my grandmother’s closet, my mother had it, I had it at the high school, ‘”said Ashley Roberts.
Roberts is the owner and curator of Canned Ham Vintage.
“I started collecting vintage when I was very young and mum and I had always talked about doing a small shop or trying something online and we got to the point where we are like now here’s the lime, let’s try it and we started in the trailer” , he said.

His canned ham trailer is now located off 12th Street in Sarasota. It is a beacon, which attracts new and regular customers.
His business has expanded. Inside his shop you will find a wide range of clothing, accessories and household items, from the 70s to the 70s.
On some items you will find a price tag and a history of provenance.
“I really like that whoever buys it gets the feeling that Judy bought it in 1976 in Milwaukee and celebrated at it and had a lot of fun and continues to live with the next person,” said Roberts.

It is a true collaboration. Cheri McNulty is Ashley’s mom and head dressmaker.
“There are so many things coming in and they might just be missing a stock or a button or a zipper is broken or in need of a little repair and that’s one of my jobs,” McNulty said.
Each piece is cleaned and brought back to life. Many end up getting their own photoshoot for thousands of people to view and buy on Instagram.
From road trips, to real estate sales, and trips out of the country, Ashley and her mother find clothes from all over the world. Once paired with the new owner, it’s the moment they’ve been waiting for.
“We always say that. It’s crystal slipper time where they wear this dress and it fits them well and they say, ‘Oh, this is the dress,'” McNulty said.
“They try it and say, ‘Oh my God, it’s made for me’ and, ‘Thanks for finding this and making it available to me,’” Roberts added. “It really is my favorite moment.”
For another generation, these pieces of the past continue to create new ones.
“Keeping the past alive with vintage clothing is important because the quality is different from how it is made now and I don’t want anyone to forget it. The way we made things and the quality that went into the garments. it was different and if we forget we will never be able to go back to that, ”Roberts said.
