Al Boum Photo kicked off his preparations for the Cheltenham Gold Cup with his fourth straight win at the Savills New Year’s Day Chase in Tramore.
Willie Mullins’ charge landed the Festival film in 2019 and 2020, but had to settle for third place last year when Minella Indo broke her offer to join Golden Miller, Arkle, Best Mate and Cottage Rake. as a three-time winner of the race.
Al Boum Photo went on to finish second behind Clan Des Obeaux at Punchestown in April and after Mullins chose to evade a couple of options prior to this term, the 10-year-old made his reappearance in this grade three run for the fourth consecutive year.
Only four horses started the race – all trained by Mullins – with Al Boum Photo ejecting the 1-6 favorite in the hands of Paul Townend.
Acapella Bourgeois, who finished second in this race for the past two years, decided to run at a gallop with Al Boum Photo sitting on his heels until he leapt to the head at the eighth fence.
When his stablemate quickly pulled away and was pulled up, Al Boum Photo ran off at a gallop in front and while Townend had to shake the reins at a couple of fences from the house while Burrows Saint tried to move upward, the winner eventually had his stable mate well covered.
After he canceled the last one, Townend only had to keep him at work for a four-length verdict.
