Brighton 2 – 0 Brentford

Brighton ended their 11-game Premier League streak without a win when goals from Leandro Trossard and Neal Maupay saw them beat Brentford 2-0 in Boxing Day.

Graham Potter’s side had drawn eight and lost three of their previous league games, winning only once after a 1-0 win in the September final at Brentford Community Stadium.

There was little to separate the teams until the 34th minute, when a lob of hope from Trossard overtook goalkeeper Alvaro Fernandez and into the net. Shortly thereafter, Maupay (42) scored his first goal against Brentford since his departure in the summer of 2019, curling a superb shot at the corner of the goalposts.

Brentford should have found the net in a better second half. Robert Sanchez made two sensational stops in quick succession. Marc Cucurella then nodded a header from Ethan Pinnock on the line as Brighton held out for their first Premier League win in over three months.

The win sees Brighton in the top half of the table, going ninth on 23 points and dropping Brentford in 13th – where Albion had been at the start of the match.
