Blake Ferguson, a former Australian rugby league international who recently changed the code, was arrested in Japan on drug offenses, his club NEC Green Rockets Tokatsu said.

The 31-year-old winger has played in Australia’s elite National Rugby League (NRL) for more than a decade and has represented his country seven times.

He has signed a deal with the Green Rockets, where former Wallabies manager Michael Cheika is director of rugby, after failing to secure a new contract with the Parramatta Eels at the end of the NRL’s 2021 season.

“Blake Ferguson, a contract player belonging to the NEC Green Rockets Tokatsu, was arrested on 30 December on suspicion of possession of illegal drugs,” the club said in a statement.

“We deeply apologize for causing great concern and inconvenience to all involved. Our team will cooperate fully with the police investigation and will endeavor to understand the situation.”

New Zealander Joel Everson served 23 days in a Japanese prison in 2020 after testing positive for cocaine while playing for the Hino Red Dolphins.

As evidence of the seriousness with which the rugby officials took the matter, all Top League matches were suspended for three weeks after Everson’s arrest and the Red Dolphins canceled all remaining matches for the season.
