Belinda Bencic tested positive for COVID-19 after her trip to Abu Dhabi and has “severe symptoms”. It comes just a day after Rafael Nadal announced he had tested positive too.

Swiss star Bencic traveled to Abu Dhabi to play in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition event last week, alongside Nadal.

She lost to Tunisian Ons Jabeur, who had replaced US Open champion Emma Raducanu after testing positive for COVID-19 and withdrew from the event.

“Unfortunately, and even though I am fully vaccinated, I recently tested positive for COVID-19,” Bencic said on Twitter.

“I am currently isolating and taking all precautions (measures) to overcome this as best I can as I am experiencing quite severe symptoms (fever, aches, chills).

“Even if the timing is not ideal – as I was in the final stages of my preparations for the Australian Open swing – I will travel to Australia as soon as I have been released and passed the isolation period.”

In other news, Karolina Muchova, semi-finalist at the Australian Open 2021, has withdrawn from next year’s tournament.

The 25-year-old, who reached the semi-finals of a major for the first time and entered the top 20 this year, did not play due to injury after a first-round defeat at the US Open in September.

“I am sad to announce that my 2022 season will not start in Australia. I am doing everything I can to get back on the pitch as soon as I can,” Muchova tweeted.

The Australian Open starts on January 17th.
