the battle over the future of computing

The battle over the future of computing

It’s a sign of the times. Right now the computer industry is undergoing one of its periodic upheavals in which an aging platform is swept away and replaced by something newer, cheaper, and better. In this case, the victim is the personal computer. Just as mainframes gave way to minicomputers and minicomputers gave way to PCs, the PC is about to be eclipsed by mobile devices. Apple’s new smash-hit product, the iPad, might seem like a toy, but soon it and other mobile devices will become our primary computers, replacing laptops and even desktop machines.

In mobile, Jobs sees a shot at redemption. But this time he faces a new opponent, Google, whose mobile operating system, called Android, has emerged as the biggest rival to Apple.

iPhone 4 The Next Smartphone

June 10th, 2010 by admin | 2 Comments | Filed in Technology

Apple CEO Steve Jobs officially announced the company’s latest smartphone upgrade, the iPhone 4, today. While it wasn’t exactly a secret after the prototype was found in a bar, the official Apple announcement did confirm a lot of hardware specs. And they sure are impressive.

The phone itself is 24% thinner than previous iPhones, too. ” “It is the thinnest smartphone on the planet,” Jobs said. (more…)

Warpgate HD, Freeverse, £4.99

Warpgate lets you explore the galaxy, hopping among star systems in search of adventure and cheap quantum inducers to sell for profit. A sprawling and massively involving capitalist space opera laden with Star Wars references.

Pinball HD, OOO Gameprom, £1.79

Comprising three tables, the scaled-up pinball machines look stunning and benefit from not having to zoom in to see the whole table. Star of the show is the quadruple-flippered Jungle Style. (more…)

iPad 3G Goes on Sale

www.apple.com - iPad

In the second stage of a two-part rollout, Apple began selling the pricier, high-speed wireless version of the iPad in the United States, on Friday.

Although the event certainly lacked the buildup and excitement of the April 3 debut of the Wi-fi version – with the heartiest waiting in line overnight – some Apple retail stores in big cities still saw decent-sized crowds ahead of the 5 pm launch.

At a store in downtown San Francisco, roughly 75 people stood in line 90 minutes before the 3G iPad went on sale.

Several people said they had waited for the more expensive version of Apple’s tablet because they saw it as a potential replacement for their laptops, at least in certain situations. (more…)
