Google turns 12, gets virtual cake

September 28th, 2010 by admin | 1 Comment | Filed in News

Google celebrated its 12 years Monday with a birthday cake doodle created by Wayne Thiebaud, an American artist famous for his paintings of cakes and pastries.

“Our thanks to Wayne Thiebaud for helping us celebrate our 12th bday with a lovely doodle!” Google tweeted.

It’s not clear why Google chooses to celebrate its birthday on September 27 instead of other noteworthy days in its history. Google filed for incorporation in California on September 4, 1998. Co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin set up in a Silicon Valley garage and hired their first employee, fellow Stanford grad Craig Silverstein, on September 21 of that year.

Since then, Google has grown rapidly from a search engine into a tech giant that offers a variety of web-based services, from e-mail to calendars to internet phone calling to TV. An increasing number of smartphones run its popular Android operating system. (more…)

Heavy rain dampen legislators’ free holiday to London

September 27th, 2010 by admin | 1 Comment | Filed in News

Heavy rain in London has apparently hindered Indonesian legislators visiting the city from going to Princess Diana’s burial site. The legislators are from House Commission III on law and they are visiting London as part of a field study on the immigration bill.

Numerous reports have said that in London, most of the legislators’ schedules consisted of sightseeing, not conducting a study or doing the research needed on the immigration bill.

Ahmad Yani from the United Development Party (PPP) acknowledged Monday that part of the legislators’ schedule was sightseeing around London’s landmarks, but that it was scheduled only during their free time.

“We would have liked to go sightseeing, but the rain was too heavy,” Yani told reporters.

Yani added that the legislators were only able to visit Big Ben and he refused to acknowledge that the legislators had toured the Burberry fashion boutique, as previously reported by various media.

“[Burberry] is very expensive,” he said. [TheJakartaPost.red]

Running barefoot

August 21st, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Technology

These are some interesting shoes/socks that you might have seen before.

They look a lot like aqua-socks, except they have room for the toes in their design. Apparently, “running without shoes can strengthen your feet, ankles, and lower legs and improve balance”. Now we know why Frodo and Sam never wore any shoes.

Apparently, they have been on celebrities like Matthew McConaughey, Channing Tatum, and Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George wears them for beach football. Also, the Vibram FiveFingers are so popular is having a difficult time keeping them in stock, and there are knock-off brands coming out of the woodwork.

I suppose these are the shoes for those who really long for the experience of running barefoot. However, it isn’t for people who are just starting to run or returning from a long layoff, and you need to ease in slowly. There are those who think these five-toed shoes aren’t worth your time or money, and others that swear up and down by them.

Right now, I would like to hear from our readers. If you have tried these five-toed shoes, and have either good or bad results, let us know. Also, can you answer me this question: can you stub your toe with these guys on? [via Gadget]
